The public took its cue from the Los Angeles media, which reported that Mike Garrett had fired John Robinson in a voice mail.
DARYL GROSS: Sometimes when things get reported, a good story beats accuracy, and I think that’s a bad postulate. All this stuff talked about how John got fired on an answering machine? I was around Mike that night, and he was trying to reach John to have a conversation and left him a message saying to call him back. That’s the only thing that ever happened on the message machine, because I was sitting there when Mike made the call.
Coach Robinson was probably asked, “Did you talk to Mike?” He probably said, “Well, he left me a message on my voice mail.” The press took that and made it that Garrett fired Robinson on his voice mail. They just ran with it. It sounds good, but it’s not true.
SCOTT WOLF: They asked me for Robinson’s home number, which I thought was hilarious at the time. Garrett definitely called him, but Robinson didn’t answer, and Garrett fired him by message. Also, they hired Paul Hackett before they fired Robinson. I was actually the one who found out they were interviewing Hackett. USC had a couple guys in Kansas City, where Hackett was an assistant coach with the Chiefs. I called Robinson, and I said, “Hey, you heard anything about Paul Hackett?” He said, “Oh, no, I know Paul. He would have told me if they offered him the job. He hasn’t talked to me about that, so I know they haven’t talked to him.” But they had already sewn up the deal that night in Kansas City.
KEYSHAWN JOHNSON: He fired him on a voice mail. It was so stupid, though. I mean, then you hire Paul Hackett? Why would you do that? Robinson had only been there for four years. Two of the four years he goes to a major bowl game. I don’t understand why it’s time for him to go. That’s crazy.
BILLY MILLER: When they fired Coach Robinson, we had a meeting. It was guys who were juniors but were going to come back as seniors. We really wanted to leave. All of us did. We heard that Coach Robinson got fired on a voice mail. When you’re a kid, you don’t understand business. But you understand respect. He deserved a celebratory send-off even if he was at the end of his rope. So that left a lot of USC people angry. When you fire a guy over voice mail, a guy that means so much to so many people, that just comes off so wrong.
